How to Prepare for a Remote Tech Support Session

Save time and protect your information with a simple preparation checklist for remote computer, Wi-Fi, software, or device support.

Describe the problem in observable terms

Instead of saying that a device is broken, note what you expected, what actually happened, and the exact wording of any message on screen. Include when the issue started and whether it happens every time.

If sound, video, Wi-Fi, or a peripheral is involved, list the affected device models and how they are connected.

Prepare access without sharing permanent credentials

Close private documents and unrelated applications before screen sharing. Use a temporary support code when the support tool offers one, and remain present throughout the session.

You should type passwords yourself. Never send passwords, recovery codes, payment details, or API keys through chat or email.

Preserve evidence before changing settings

Take screenshots of errors and save important work. Avoid installing several cleanup tools or following multiple repair videos immediately before the session; each change can hide the original cause.

For internet problems, know where the modem and router are located and whether other devices are affected.

  • Restart only after saving open work.
  • Keep chargers and required cables nearby.
  • Have administrator access available if the repair requires system changes.

End with a clear handoff

Before the session ends, confirm what changed, what still needs attention, and what would cause the issue to return. Written follow-up notes make the repair easier to understand and maintain.
